Building Trauma-Informed Schools and Communities

Presenter Proposal Form

Thank you for your interest in presenting at the ACSSW National School Social Work Institute, Building Trauma-Informed Schools and Communities, on June 17-18, 2020, in Los Angeles. Please click "Register" on the left to begin your submission.

ACSSW is looking for proposals that fall under these three umbrellas:

  1. ACES in action/how it is being applied in our field currently, tools that relate to ACES, developments in this field of study
    • the impact of trauma on the developing brain 
    • the impact of childhood sexual abuse on the developing brain/psychoeducation around how a school social worker can support prevention of childhood sexual abuse within the school setting
  2. Trauma-informed best practices which can be utilized in the school setting which can include:
    • professional development sessions which can be turn-keyed to teaching staff at schools by the school social worker
    • specific trauma-informed interventions – what the intervention is, how it is applied and practice time via role plays or other engagement style that allows attendees to internalize and build skill in the application of the intervention 
    • therapeutic models and their application that supports a child who has experienced trauma (i.e. art therapy, TFCBT, EMDR, etc.) 
    • policy and protocols for schools that incorporate trauma-informed lens for school culture, parent engagement, student intervention, school discipline policies
    • restorative circles and restorative practices in lieu of more traditional discipline structures
    • how to help stabilize a school system post- traumatic event in community/in school
  3. Self-Care and Role Sustainability
    • art therapy
    • Trauma Stewardship
    • managing up skills and advocacy
    • yoga (as in someone teaches a restorative yoga class) 
    • mindfulness (someone leads a session on the benefits of mindfulness and then leads an extended mindfulness session)
    • emotional constancy within the context of a school setting
Other proposals that are the basis for trauma-informed care such as opioid addiction, sexual harassment, witnessing violence, and other types of trauma which may be overlooked as being traumatic, are also encouraged.

Sessions are 90 minutes each. Six sessions are planned, three each day. You are welcome to present for more than one session.

This proposal form must be submitted no later than December 29, 2019.  

Presentation proposals will be reviewed and accepted or declined by ACSSW by January 15, 2020.

Presenters will be requested to confirm their plans to present within two weeks following acceptance of their proposal.

Accepted presenters are eligible for discounted registration fees. If you are attending both days of the Institute, the fee is $225; for one day, the fee is $175. Presenters who only attend the Institute at the time of their presentation will not be charged a registration fee.
